Here are the amazing seminar line up for the 2017 UK RumFest. 

Most UK RumFest seminars and masterclasses are free to book on the day. However, they are extremely popular and as spaces are VERY limited you can secure your place in advance by reserving online. There is a booking fee of £5 to secure your place at the seminar before the show. If you choose to wait and sign up on the day we cannot guarantee that there will be any spaces left as all seminars are booked on a first come first served basis. Saturday

During Saturday’s RumFest you have a selection of Seminars to choose from as well as in the more intimate Tasting Suite. We are also very happy to welcome the acclaimed Gianluca Gargano who will be presenting Velier Rums with 3  sessions per day. 12:30 – 13:15 -Don Q…. Puerto Rico’s Finest rums hosted by Don Q’s Master Blender Jaiker Soto Bravo

Jaiker Soto Bravo is a chemical engineer, with 15 years of experience in the operation of rum production plants, specializing in fermentation, distillation, ageing, formulation, blending, sensory evaluation, research, new products development and quality assurance. He has worked for major rum production companies in South and Central America holding positions in all production process that has allowed him to train as a master blender in the rum industry. Similarly, he has worked as an engineering consultant in rum manufacturing processes in Costa Rica and El Salvador, and has participated as a speaker and judge at international conferences and tasting rums competitions in Colombia and Mexico. He is currently the master blender of Destileria Serralles, which gives his expertise, passion and love for the work in the development and assembly of exceptional rums that are the hallmark of Don Q.

 

13:45 – 14:30 – (DOC  Rums of Venezuela) How to taste and pair Venezuelan Rums

This is a great opportunity for Rum Lovers to taste and learn how to distinguish four different rums with the D.O.C. Ron de Venezuela. A group of professional rum experts will explain what a designation of origin is, the characteristics of this seal of quality, and the process of earning this badge. The singular features of rum will also be analysed as well as the production process, its aging and complexity.

A moment to enjoy the quality of the D.O.C. Ron de Venezuela rums.


15:00 – 15:45 – Scotch Malt Whisky Society Single Cask Rum tasting…With Global Rum Ambassador Ian Burrell £15.00 (£10 in advance)

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society are famous worldwide for bringing whisky lovers around the world together with their single cask whiskies. But for the first time they have recruited the Global Rum Ambassador Ian Burrell to use his expertise to select a few single cask rums from distilleries across the Caribbean basin. These rums are barrel strength and unique as the cannot be recreated ever again. So come and enjoy a taste of few single cask rums, a luxury that is normally only afforded by members of the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society .

 

16:15 – 17:00 – The Tiki Cocktail Top 10 By Jeff “Beachbum” Berry

Jeff “Beachbum” Berry is known throughout the drinks world as the godfather of the modern tiki drinks revival. This award winning author has written several books on Tiki history, cocktails and culture including “Sippin Safari“, “Beachbum Berry Remixed”, “Potions of the Caribbean” So when it comes to Tiki cocktails there is no better person to recommend an exotic “Rum Cocktail” than the master himself. In this class you’ll get to taste some of Jeff’s favourite tiki cocktails of all time.

14.30 – 15.30 – Old Man Rum “Expressions’’ & Black Tot Rum

Sample one the rarest pure blended rums ever to be sold in the UK. The Magnificent “Expressions” rum is a blend from 26 to 34 years and is ONLY bottled to order. The Black Tot rum is part of the famous last consignment of rum issued to the royal navy. The ration was stopped on July 31st 1970 but this bottling give you a chance to taste a piece of British navy history.

12:30 -13:15 – Rococo Chocolates & Rum Tasting.

Olivia Wasson is studying Politics, Philosophy and Law and in the meantime she works for Rococo Chocolates where she brings all her passion about food, drinks and of course chocolate! This is the first RumFest for Olivia who is ready to share the love! The experience will begin with an introduction to the tasting technique and how to use all five senses to appreciate your chocolate. The perfect opportunity to put your palate to the test! Discover the amazing combinations of complementary and contrasting notes in each pairing with our award-winning bars and truffles.

 

13:45 – 14:30 – Unwrap Rum’s Aromatic Fingerprint – with Kim Lahiri

Join us delving deep into the aromas and flavour profiles that build the foundation of Rum’s familiar and much loved taste. Experience accurate nosing of individual elements that make the mouth water at the  of molasses, caramel. vanilla, feel the heat of those spices, drown yourself in the juices of tropical fruits….if this sounds like your idea of heaven, book now for an aroma masterclass on educating the nose to recognise these one by one, merging them into a synergy that creates the heavenly aroma that is Rum.

We will explore the aroma of rum through the art of smelling intelligently. Come and learn valuable techniques that will help you discern the hidden treasures buried deep inside the barrel.

Velier Room

The Velier company was founded by the Chaix family in 1947. From 1953 to 1983, this small traditional company, located in the port of Gênes, specialised in the importation and distribution of wines, champagnes and spirits. In 1983, then aged 25, Luca Gargano acquired shares in Velier. Under his influence the company began specialising in the importation of exceptional spirits to be supplied to the most prestigious establishments in Italy. In the early 1990s, Luca Gargano heard rumours of a mythical, quasi-legendary stock of St James Rhum that had supposedly been distilled at the end of the 19th century. Eventually he discovered proof that this stock, distilled in 1885 and bottled in 1952, did indeed exist. And in 1991, following lengthy discussions, Luca finally managed to acquire the entirety of this stock, which he then released on the Italian market. These selections of rums have since multiplied and led to the birth of exceptional ranges. Velier is now seen as the No.1 independent bottle of premium rums in the world.

Rum Ambassador , Luca Gargano will guide you through a tutored tasting of some of Velier’s amazing rum bottlings. Spaces will be limited.

The Members Room


The Members Room is an exclusive, private and informal tasting suite for the Rum Experience Members to sample exclusive rums that are not currently being sold in UK. The suite will be hosted by expert rum bloggers, journalists and writers from across the world.

We look at rum’s history from origins to the modern era with a particular emphasis on the history of rum from Barbados and Jamaica. Hosted by the Award winning master distiller from the Foursquare Distillery in Barbados

14:00-14:45 – Volatile substances : understanding the taste elements of rums and its terroirs with Alexandre Gabriel

Alexandre Gabriel is the master blender of Plantation Rums and owner of West Indies Rum Distillery. In this seminar, Alexandre will explore what truly differentiates one rum from another – the volatile flavor compounds particular to each. A guided tour of what truly makes an exceptional tasting bottle of rum; from fermentation, distillation and the maillard reaction, to oxidation and wood extraction.

15:15 -16:00 William Hinton Rum – Seminar
Imagine an eden like subtropical paradise island in the European part of the Atlantic where a British entrepreneur in the 19th century set up a sugar mill and rum factory transforming the economic history of the Island itself. We invite you to board on a trip to the Rum past… and future with Madeira island Rum with the guidance of the Global Rum Ambassador Ian Burrel and Mário Gomes William Hinton´s Ambassador.
